They way I comunicate everyday

I adapt the way I talk and write everyday for my kids.  I try to explain things in the simplest form for my two and four year old.  Writing with my four year old is a lesson in patience.  I have to come up with some unique sentences to keep him engaged.  It can be fun.
I sometimes fine that what I say to my kids, I carry over to my work and will use the same terms.  For example, no no, or I got to go potty.  Believe me, I get some odd looks.
Lets not forget about my two teenagers.  Their language is foreign to me.  Words like, straight edge, which to my understanding is some type of tattoo that Dakoda thinks is cool and likes to flip his mom out about by saying, when he turns eighteen that he is going to get it.  With my daughter Brenda, well lets just say that she talks to fast for me to understand. With the exception of when they want something, then they can be very clear and to the point with multiple supporting reasons why I should buy this or let them do that.  Its a lot like the PEE structure.
The PEE structure and thesis statements are very important at the academic level.  Most if not all of our papers we write for any class will benefit from both.  Just as my kids get what they want, we will get better grades if we are clear and to the point with multiple supporting points with a good conclusion.

  1. Jeremy, I love your examples of your teens using PEE structure to get things they want. This is a great illustration of our natural tendency to use PEE structure and of rhetoric in action outside the classroom.

  2. Jeremy,
I completely agree with you on kids being like a PEE structure. I also believe you are correct on carrying the language you use with the little ones with you to work because I too catch myself doing the same thing. I too believe we will get good grades if we are clear and to the point with supporting facts in our writing.
